Baked Apple Slices With Cinnamon

Tender baked apple slices are coated with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter for an easy fall dessert or sweet side dish. It is a simple way to use six apples without making pie crust or streusel.

Notes

  • Cut the apples into uniform 1/4-inch slices so they cook at approximately the same rate.
  • For balanced flavor, use a combination of sweet and tart baking apples. Granny Smith and Honeycrisp are my favorite pairing.
  • Baking time may vary slightly depending on the apple varieties. The slices are ready when easily pierced with a fork but still holding their shape.
  • For additional flavor, stir 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the butter mixture.
  • Serve the apples warm as a side dish or top them with vanilla ice cream, Greek yogurt or salted caramel sauce.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • To make them in a slow cooker, combine the prepared apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, spices and melted butter. Cover and cook on Low for approximately 4 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples will be softer and saucier than the oven-baked version.
