Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients. Add the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper to a small saucepan. Stir until well combined.
1 cup ketchup, 1 tbsp water, 1 tsp brown sugar, 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp Tabasco sauce, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, salt and black pepper
  • Simmer the sauce. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Cool and serve. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool. Serve with roast beef sandwiches, burgers, chicken sandwiches or fries.

Notes

  • The sauce should be thinner and more pourable than traditional barbecue sauce. It will thicken slightly as it cools.
  • Avoid simmering the sauce for longer than 5 minutes. If it becomes too thick, stir in water 1 teaspoon at a time.
  • For more heat, add additional Tabasco sauce a few drops at a time.
  • For a tangier sauce, stir in 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar after simmering.
  • Store cooled sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Stir before serving.
Do not over-simmer the sauce. Five minutes is enough to blend the flavors while preserving the thinner, pourable consistency that distinguishes Arby’s sauce from traditional barbecue sauce.
