Ingredients

  • 6 oz tomato paste 1 can
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients. Add the tomato paste, water, sugar, oregano, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder to a medium saucepan. Whisk or stir until the tomato paste is fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
  • Simmer the sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken slightly and deepen in color as it cooks.
  • Taste and serve. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. If the sauce is thicker than you prefer, stir in a splash of water. Spoon over al dente pasta and top with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in additional water a few tablespoons at a time.
  • For a meat sauce, brown 1 pound of ground beef, Italian sausage or ground turkey and drain off any excess grease. Add the sauce ingredients directly to the skillet and cook as directed.
  • Refrigerate leftover sauce in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze cooled sauce in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Whisk the tomato paste and water together thoroughly before bringing the sauce to a boil. This creates a smooth consistency and prevents small lumps of tomato paste from remaining in the finished sauce.
