How To Cook Sauerkraut From a Bag

Ingredients

  • 32 oz sauerkraut including liquid
  • seasonings or spices as desired (optional)

Instructions

  • Add the sauerkraut. Empty the entire bag of sauerkraut, including the liquid, into a large skillet.
  • Season and cook. Add desired spices or seasonings and stir to combine. Cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Drain off some of the liquid before cooking if you prefer a milder flavor. For an even less sour result, rinse and drain the sauerkraut first.
  • Cook for up to 25 minutes for softer, more tender sauerkraut. Add a splash of water if the skillet begins to dry out.
  • Add flavor with black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, caraway seeds, cooked bacon, sausage, sautéed onions or 1 to 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.
  • To cook sauerkraut in the oven, spread it and its liquid in a covered baking dish. Bake at 350°F for approximately 20 minutes, or until heated through.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
    Keep the liquid from the bag for a stronger, tangier flavor. Drain some of it or rinse the sauerkraut first if you prefer a milder taste.
