Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pomegranate

Instructions

  • Cut the pomegranate. Place the pomegranate on a cutting board and use a sharp knife to slice it in half.
  • Loosen the seeds. Use your fingers to gently loosen the white membrane from around the seeds.
  • Tap out the seeds. Hold one pomegranate half cut-side down over a large bowl. Firmly hit the outer rind with a heavy wooden spoon until the seeds begin to fall into the bowl.
  • Remove the remaining seeds. Gently pull apart the rind and membrane with your fingers. Use a paring knife or small spoon to loosen any stubborn pomegranate seeds (arils).
  • Clean and enjoy. Remove and discard any pieces of white membrane from the bowl. Eat the pomegranate seeds fresh or use them in your favorite recipes.

Notes

For less mess: Place the bowl in your kitchen sink before tapping the pomegranate. This helps contain any splattering juice.
Loosen the seeds first: Before cutting, roll the whole pomegranate firmly on the counter with the palm of your hand to help loosen the seeds from the membrane.
Watch for stains: Pomegranate juice can stain clothing and some surfaces, so clean up spills right away.
Alternative method: Cut the pomegranate into quarters and submerge them in a bowl of water. Use your fingers to separate the seeds from the membrane while submerged, then drain well.
For less mess, place your bowl directly in the kitchen sink before tapping the pomegranate with a wooden spoon. This helps contain any splattering juice while the seeds fall right into the bowl.
