    Why This Recipe Works

I always love when pies can be simplified and these pumpkin hand pies are a good way to make that happen. No fork needed for these babies. Grab ’em straight from the baking sheet and sink your teeth in!

Here’s how good they are. I had a recent batch sitting on a baking sheet on my stove top just like in the top photo of this post. EVERY time I turned around one of my boys was stealing another bite. So if you are asked to bring pumpkin pie to Thanksgiving dinner this year? I’ve got your back!

    Recipe Ingredients

Pumpkin puree – You can purchase a can of pumpkin puree for this recipe. Or consider making your own pumpkin puree in your Instant Pot.

Pumpkin pie spice mixture – If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice mixture on hand, you can combine 2 tbsp cinnamon, 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger and 1 tsp allspice, cloves and nutmeg.

Pie crusts – If you love to make homemade pie crusts, skip this grocery item. But if you want to get these baking in the oven quickly, you can purchase refrigerated pie crusts and then roll them out.

Sugar – Regular granulated sugar will work on this recipe but if you have finishing sugar or turbinado sugar, which is a larger granule and retains some of the molasses flavor from the sugarcane, it will look pretty on these hand pies!

    How To Make Hand Pies

    Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray or put aside a parchment lined baking sheet.

In a medium bowl, combine pumpkin pie filling, sugar, pumpkin spice and cinnamon. Mix well.

    Step 2

Place the pie crusts on a flat surface and cut each in half. Spoon 1/4 of the pumpkin mixture onto half of each half circle, leaving room for sealing edges. Spoon cream cheese onto remaining halves, also leaving room for sealing. Fold each half circle in half and seal edges.

    Step 3

Place hand pies on prepared baking sheet and brush tops with an egg wash. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and pumpkin pie spice and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Let cool for 5 minutes before eating or allow them to cool to room temperature!

    Recipe Notes

    • Pumpkin puree substitute: equal parts of cooked, mashed sweet potatoes and butternut squash is a great substitution and you might not even be able to tell the difference!
    • To dress up your hand pies, crimp the edges of the pie with fork tines for a decorative look.
    • Sift powdered sugar over the tops of the pies once they’ve cooled a few minutes to give them a final topping.
    • Use a biscuit cutter and cut two pieces of the pie crust to make one round smaller pie. It’s fun to have smaller amounts for little kids to enjoy or for a party.
    • Enjoy warm with a cup of coffee!

    What Is A Hand Pie

A hand pie is a pastry with some type of filling (whether sweet or savory). It is made by placing the filling inside the dough or pie crust and closing it completely shut and then either baking or frying it.

Are Canned Pumpkin And Pumpkin Puree The Same?

Canned pumpkin is straight-up pumpkin that has been put into a can. Some pumpkin puree contains other ingredients that flavors it, making it pumpkin-pie ready. Read your labels to see what you’re getting in your next can of pumpkin!

    FAQ About Pumpkin Puree

Can pumpkin puree be eaten raw?

Pumpkin puree can be eaten raw. However, it is not necessarily delicious until you have added the ingredients to a recipe you are including it in.

    Can pumpkin puree be frozen?

Pumpkin puree can be frozen. Add the puree to an air tight container and you can safely freeze it for 4-5 months.

    Is pumpkin puree healthy?

Good news! Pumpkin puree is full of healthy vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It’s low calorie and it’s a benefit to your eyes, heart and skin.

When does pumpkin puree go bad?

Pumpkin puree can go bad after you open it and remove it from the can. If you don’t need to use up the entire batch with baking, then you can put the leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate it for 3-5 days. Alternatively, you can freeze it for 2-3 months in the same container to use it later.

Is pumpkin puree good for dogs?

Pumpkin puree is known to be a good addition to a dog’s diet. Fresh pumpkin puree has a lot of water in it so canned pumpkin puree will offer the most fiber, nutrients and vitamins to their diet.
