Serving plate of sweet potato fries with a small white dip on the platter too.

Why This Sweet Potato Fries Recipe Works

    • The recipe only calls for three pantry-staple ingredients, which means you can make these anytime.
    • Baking instead of deep frying keeps the fries lighter while still delivering crisp edges and tender centers.
    • Thanks to their higher sugar content, sweet potatoes caramelize beautifully in the oven, adding deep flavor as well as color.
    • Easily customizable with a variety of spices, herbs or seasoned sour cream, and works as a side dish for nearly any meal from burgers to breakfast.
    • Family friendly and a naturally simple and wholesome alternative to frozen fries or regular potatoes.
    • My entire family devours these.delicious fries in no time! (Maybe put a small bowl aside for yourself.)

Ingredients Needed for Sweet Potato Fries

Three super simple ingredients is all you need to make these fantastic fries.

Two sweet potatoes next to two small bowls: one with salt and the other with oil.

Sweet potatoes – Choose evenly shaped potatoes for easy slicing. Orange, white, or purple varieties of sweet potato all work equally well.

Olive oil – can be subbed for another neutral flavored, high-heat oil like avocado oil or melted refined coconut oil.

Salt – You can use all sorts of salt substitutes or seasonings like garlic salt or Old Bay, or spice blends like Cajun seasoning, taco seasoning, or BBQ seasoning.

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

These directions are a basic overview. Complete, step by step instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Sweet potato fries pre-cooked on a cutting board.
    1. Preheat oven and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into equal size fries.
    3. Place in a single layer on the parchment-lined sheet pan.
    4. Drizzle the oil and toss the fries to coat, then sprinkle with salt.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes until golden and crisp

Recipe Notes and Tips for Best Results

    • Cut fries the same size for even cooking. You don’t want a bunch of thin fries and a bunch of thick fries on the same tray because they’d need different cooking times.
    • Do not overcrowd the pan or the fries will steam and not crisp. A single layer on the baking sheet ensures crisp edges.
    • Rotating the pan halfway through baking promotes even browning.
    • Toss or flip the fries halfway through for maximum crispiness.
    • Fries will continue to firm up slightly as they cool.
    • Can use a fun crinkle fry cutter.

Flavor Variations for Sweet Potato French Fries

There are a ton of ways to easily add a vast variety of flavors to your sweet potato fries. These are just a few of my favorite flavor combinations.

    • Parmesan and black pepper
    • Smoked paprika and garlic powder
    • Chili powder and lime zest for a zesty kick
    • Rosemary or thyme for an herby twist
    • Cinnamon and sugar for a sweet version

Best Dipping Sauces for Sweet Potato Fries

    • Ranch Dressing
    • Chipotle or Sriracha Mayo
    • Garlic Aioli
    • Garlic Parmesan Dipping Sauce
    • Honey Mustard Dressing
    • Quick Homemade BBQ Sauce
    • Yogurt Dill Dip

How to Make Crispy Sweet Potato Fries

    • Soak cut fries in cold water for 20 to 30 minutes to remove excess starch
    • Dry them thoroughly to remove excess water before adding oil
    • Use enough oil to lightly coat each fry
    • Avoid stacking or overlapping the fries on the baking sheet
    • Bake at high heat and check early to prevent the fries from burning

    Storage and Reheating

    • Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
    • Reheat fries in an air fryer or preheated, hot oven for best crispiness.
    • Avoid reheating in the microwave. The microwave softens the fries and makes them lose their crispness.

    Recipe FAQs

Do I need to peel sweet potatoes?

You don’t have to peel the sweet potato skins. In fact, the skin contains extra nutrients. Just be sure to give the potatoes a good scrubbing to wash them if keeping the peels on.

Why are my fries soft instead of crispy?

There are a whole bunch of reasons why your fries come out soft instead of crisp. The pan could be overcrowded, not allowing them to cook all around the edges and crisp fully. The fries could also be cut too thick and need a longer cooking time.

Can I make these in an air fryer?

Yes you can! I like to cook my sweet potato fries at 375° for about 15 minutes in the air fryer.  Check out all my tips and tricks in this post for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries.

Can I prep sweet potato fries ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare sweet potato fries ahead of time! Just peel and cut the sweet potatoes to fries and submerge in cold water. Then cover the bowl and store in the fridge overnight or up to 2 days.

Why do sweet potatoes burn faster than russets?

Russet potatoes are starchy potatoes, whereas sweet potatoes contain more natural sugar and less starch than russets. The sugar makes the sweet potato caramelize and brown faster.
