Cooking sweet potatoes is easier than ever when made in an Instant Pot! Reduce the cook time by HALF compared to oven-cooking and be assured that they will turn out perfectly every single time, with minimal effort and clean-up.
Baked potatoes are the absolute perfect side dish because they are so easy to make. When you use an electric pressure cooker to make them, they are even quicker and easier! Everyone in my family loves sweet potatoes and they have been a favorite in our house for a couple years. We enjoy the flavor much more than that of a regular ol’ potato, so we cook them in varying ways a lot.
Cooking sweet potatoes in my Instant Pot is my new favorite way to make them because it just couldn’t be easier! And as I’ve seen with the dozens of other Instant Pot recipes that have come out of my kitchen lately, the pressure cooker creates consistently perfect and delicious food every dang time. If you love baked sweet potatoes, this will be your new favorite recipe!
HOW TO MAKE SWEET POTATOES IN AN INSTANT POT
Pour 1 1/2 cups water into the Instant Pot and place steamer basket or trivet in pot.
Using fork tines, poke holes around 3-4 large sweet potatoes and add them to the pot. Cut the potatoes in half crosswise, if needed.
Place the cover on the pot and set timer to 15 minutes on high pressure (use the pressure cook setting). It will take the pot around 14 minutes to build up pressure before it begins cooking.
When cooking time is done, let the pressure release naturally. Remove the cover and serve with a pat of butter and spoonful of brown sugar!
RECIPE TIPS: MAKE THE BEST INSTANT POT BAKED SWEET POTATOES!
When serving this as a side, consider adding a pat of salted to the flesh. For an extra touch of sweetness, add a spoonful of brown sugar, too!
Be sure to scrub your potatoes well before cooking. The skin is edible and delicious!
ARE YAMS SWEET POTATOES?
I was confused for so many years after cutting into a sweet potato only to find white flesh. Was it really a sweet potato or was it a yam? It is rare to find an actual yam in a U.S. grocery store. What you are seeing when you go to the store are two varieties of sweet potatoes. Crazy, right?!
What is labeled “yam” at the store is actually a sweet potato with brown skin and dark orange flesh. What is labeled “sweet potato” at the store is a sweet potato with lighter skin and also lighter flesh. This variety is more firm in texture and not as fluffy when cooked. When you purchase sweet potatoes for this dish, you will want to purchase the “yam” variety! No more potato confusion, phew!
HOW MANY CARBS IN A SWEET POTATO

ARE SWEET POTATOES GOOD FOR YOU?
Sweet potatoes are VERY good for you and they are packed with nutrients and vitamins. They are high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C and magnesium. They are also low in calories and can contribute to having a healthy gut!
CAN DOGS EAT SWEET POTATOES?
My dog is constantly underfoot when I am preparing food in the kitchen, so I am always curious which food are and are not ok for him to nibble on. Cooked sweet potatoes are actually very gentle on digestive systems and they contain a lot of nutrients, making them safe for your pups to consume.

WHY DOES IT TAKE MY INSTANT POT SO LONG TO HEAT UP?
The time leading up to actual cook time may seem long and even confusing (“What is going ON in there?!”), but it’s an important part of the process! The Instant Pot is working on building up the appropriate amount of pressure that it will be cooking the food at. It handles liquids and solids differently and also fresh and frozen differently, so the time can vary. Most recipes take between 10 and 25 minutes to build up pressure.
BEST RECIPES TO MAKE IN AN INSTANT POT
The list of recipes you can make in an Instant Pot is endless! It can act as a slow cooker, saute pan, steamer, rice maker, yogurt maker and pressure cooker. It can cook soup, chili, pasta, meat, potatoes, veggies, cake, beans and so much more. Here are a few of my favorite Instant Pot recipes:
HOW TO CLEAN AN INSTANT POT
Keep your Instant Pot shiny, clean and scent-free by following these simple steps:
EXTERIOR – Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down any grease or gunk on the outside of the Instant Pot. Use a brush or the edge of a clean cloth to reach inside the rim to remove food that may have gotten stuck in the grooves. The exterior “housing” should never ever be immersed in liquid or run underwater.
INNER POT – The stainless steel inner pot can be hand-washed OR run through a dishwasher. See below tips for deep cleaning when needed.
COVER – The inside of the IP cover can usually just be wiped down with a clean cloth after use. If there is food stuck to the inside of the cover, remove the sealing ring and run the cover under hot water and scrub with a brush or cloth.
SEALING RING – The sealing ring can be easily removed from the Instant Pot and hand-washed with warm, soapy water OR run through a dishwasher when needed.
TRIVET – The trivet that is inserted into the Instant Pot can be scrubbed with a brush, hand-washed with warm, soapy water or run through a dishwasher.
DEEP CLEAN – If the inner pot starts to show signs that it needs a deep cleaning (cloudiness or discoloration), pour either 2 cups of white vinegar OR 2 cups of water plus 1 tablespoon of lemon juice into the pot. Place the cover on the pot and set to STEAM for 3 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally and remove the cover. Remove sealing ring and inner pot and allow to air dry.
