    Why This Recipe Works

This easy French onion dip made with creamy Greek yogurt only requires 6 ingredients, no onion soup packets, and can be put together in just minutes! You can make it as healthy as you like, and it’s still absolutely delicious!

Plus, classic French onion dip is the perfect appetizer for family gatherings, dinner parties, or game day and it is always a crowd pleaser. And this Greek yogurt version is no exception. But you’ll want to serve this with more than just potato chips!

From chicken to steak, tacos and more, you’ll want to try the rich flavors of this delicious and healthy dip on all sorts of different things. Of course, it’s great with chips and veggies too.

    Recipe Ingredients

This healthy French onion dip recipe uses simple ingredients for a creamy texture and delicious flavor.

Bowls filled with ingredients for French onion dip on a white counter.

Plain Greek yogurt – Use plain full-fat yogurt or nonfat Greek yogurt. Or get wild and use a different variety for a flavor twist. Can replace part of it with sour cream for a flavor twist.

Mayo – Full-fat mayo is recommended for the best flavor, but low-fat can also be used. Omit entirely and use all yogurt for a healthier recipe.

Onions – You can use dried minced or up to ½ cup of sweet caramelized onions.

Worcestershire sauce – The secret ingredient! Don’t skip it, unless you avoid fish. The recipe only calls for 1 tablespoon, but you can use up to 2 tablespoons for a bolder flavor.

Garlic powder – if all you have is garlic salt, omit the salt from the ingredients.

Salt – Any variety, to taste.

How to Make Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip

This creamy French onion dip with a yogurt base couldn’t be easier to make. And the homemade version is so much better than store-bought dip. You’ll have it on a constant rotation in your fridge!

    Step 1

In a medium bowl, add the Greek yogurt, mayo, minced dried onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and salt. Mix well to combine.

    Step 2

Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve chilled, with crackers, chips or fresh vegetables. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

    Recipe Notes

    • Additional spices or fresh herbs can be added, depending on tastes and what you have on hand. Fresh chives are a great addition.
    • Make the dip a few hours in advance so the flavors have a little time to develop.
    • Caramelize some chopped smaller pieces of yellow onions or sweet Vidalia onions until they are golden brown for an extra oniony dip.
    • Replace Worcestershire with some soy sauce, tamari, or liquid aminos for a fish-free option.
    • Dairy free yogurt and egg-free mayo for a vegan option when combined with anchovy-free Worcestershire.

    Greek Yogurt Substitutes

These are a few simple subs for Greek yogurt you can use in dips and dressings while still getting the best results

    • Plain yogurt
    • Skyr
    • Sour Cream
    • Mayonnaise
    • Silken tofu

    Substitutes for Worcestershire Sauce

Whether you are looking for a replacement for Worcestershire sauce because you need a fish-free alternative or you’re in the middle of making this recipe and just realized you don’t have any on hand, you are in luck.

    Greek Yogurt vs Mayo

Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt is a great mayonnaise substitute. It’s perfect for dressings, dips, salads, spreads, and even baked goods. Greek yogurt also has a lot more protein and fewer calories than its egg and oil counterpart.

    Uses for French Onion Dip

There are so many great uses for this dip beyond just chips and pretzels, but they’re great with it too!

    • The perfect dip for fresh veggies or veggie sticks
    • Of course for your favorite chips or crackers
    • A terrific topping for tacos or nachos
    • Spread on sandwiches and burgers
    • Great for topping baked potatoes or mixing in with mashed potatoes
    • Put a dollop on yourt steak and thank me later

    How to Store Leftovers

Store remaining dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I do not recommend freezing this dip. The texture changes too much during the freezing process.

How Long Does French Onion Dip Last in the Fridge

Stored properly in an airtight container with minimal air exposure, leftover dip will be good for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.
