- These juicy burgers are done in 20 minutes from start to finish, and in just a few simple steps.
Recipe Ingredients
Recipe Ingredients
Ground beef – Use 80/20 beef and create beef patties in rounded clumps, using your hands. Cook the burgers either on the grill or in a hot skillet and ensure the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
Five Guys is known for not adding anything to their beef, but if you’re feeling adventurous add black pepper or a touch of cajun seasoning to the mixture before cooking.
Onions – Both yellow and white onions work great. Creating delicious caramelized onions quickly on the stove top adds tons of flavor to this recipe.
Hamburger buns – The sesame seed bun is a necessity when creating this Five Guys burger copycat recipe, and it should also be slightly sweet in flavor. Not quite as sweet as Hawaiian sweet rolls, but close.
Before assembling the burgers, cook the buns (cut side down) on one of the hot, uncleaned skillets.
Toppings – Getting the toppings just right is essential! Fried onions, mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, tomato slices, lettuce, pickles and mayo create one delicious burger.
How To Make An Authentic Five Guys Burger
Step 1
Light a grill over medium heat or heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Divide the ground beef into four equal pieces. Roll each section into a round clump of beef, creating burger balls.
Place beef on the grill or hot pan and press down slightly on each, flattening them with a hamburger press or spatula. Cook for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until the internal temp reaches 160 degrees F.
Step 2
While the burger patties are cooking, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat.
Add the onion slices and mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes, or until fragrant and golden brown. Transfer the veggies to a bowl or work surface. Do not clean out the skillet.
Place the cut sides of the buns face down in the hot skillet for 1 minute. Transfer to work surface.
Step 3
Assemble each burger: Bottom sesame bun with 1 tbsp each of ketchup and mustard spread on it, 1/4 of the mushroom-onion mixture, burger, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 tomato slice, 4 pickle slices, top lightly toasted bun with 1 tbsp mayo spread on it.
Recipe Notes
- Serve immediately after assembling in order to enjoy the freshest, most delicious burger possible!
- Serve with a batch of homemade french fries for a more authentic Five Guys meal.
- If you do not want a version with typical toppings (like at the restaurant), cook the burger/bun in the same fashion. Here are a few ideas for extra toppings: hot sauce, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, crispy bacon, A1 sauce, sauteed veggies, a slice of cheese, bbq sauce or salsa.
- If creating a cheese burger, use American cheese slices and place them on the bottom bun or in the middle of the burger if you’re doing double stacks.
- Store leftover burgers in an airtight container or wrapped in aluminum foil for up to 3 days in the fridge.
How To Wrap a Burger in Foil
Tear off an 8-inch piece of tin foil and place the burger in the center of the sheet, half on and half off the foil. Now wrap the sides of the foil around the burger, followed by tucking the bottom up and around it. Parchment paper can also be used.
This creates a non-messy way to eat your amazing burger!
