Enjoy the famous Five Guys burger recipe in the comfort of your own home in just 20 minutes. This copycat recipe is the real thing and requires just a few simple ingredients.
Why This Recipe Works
Do you ever enjoy a simple meal at a restaurant and wonder why it’s so good? The Five Guys famous burgers are one of those foods. The ingredients aren’t super complicated, but the way the ingredients taste together creates the magic.
To the very last detail, this recipe spells out the exact way a Five Guys burger is made when ordered with all the toppings. Save a few dollars and a trip out of the house by making a batch of these burgers for your next easy dinner. Your family will love you!
Recipe Ingredients
Ground beef – Use 80/20 beef and create rounded clumps of beef using your hands. Cook the burgers either on the grill or in a hot skillet and ensure the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F. Five Guys is known for not adding anything to their beef, but if you’re feeling adventurous add black pepper or a touch of cajun seasoning to the mixture before cooking.
Onions – Yellow or white onions both work great. Creating those delicious caramelized onions quickly on the stove top adds so much flavor to this recipe.
Hamburger buns – The sesame seed bun is a necessity when creating this copycat, and it should also be slightly sweet in flavor. Not quite as sweet as Hawaiian sweet rolls, but close. Before assembling the burgers, cook the buns (cut side down) in one of the hot, uncleaned skillets.
How To Make An Authentic Five Guys Burger
Step 1
Light a grill over medium heat or heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Divide the ground beef into four equal pieces. Roll each section into a round clump of beef.
Place beef on the grill or hot pan and press down slightly on each, flattening them with a hamburger press or spatula. Cook for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until the internal temp reaches 160 degrees F.
Step 2
While the burger patties are cooking, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the onion slices and mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes, or until fragrant and golden brown. Transfer the veggies to a bowl or work surface. Do not clean out the skillet.
Place the cut sides of the buns face down in the hot skillet for 1 minute. Transfer to work surface.
Step 3
Assemble each burger: Bottom bun with 1 tbsp each of ketchup and mustard spread on it, 1/4 of the mushroom-onion mixture, burger, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 tomato slice, 4 pickle slices, top bun with 1 tbsp mayo spread on it.
Recipe Notes
- Serve immediately after assembling in order to enjoy the freshest, most delicious burger possible!
- Serve with a batch of homemade french fries for a more authentic Five Guys meal.
- If you do not want a version with typical toppings (like at the restaurant), cook the burger/bun in the same fashion. Here are a few ideas for extra toppings: hot sauce, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, crispy bacon, A1 sauce, sauteed veggies, a slice of cheese, bbq sauce or salsa.
- Store leftover burgers in an airtight container or wrapped in aluminum foil for up to 3 days in the fridge.

FAQ About Burgers
According to Wikipedia: “White Castle traces the origin of the hamburger to Hamburg, Germany with its invention by Otto Kuase. However, it gained national recognition at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair when the New York Tribune referred to the hamburger as ‘the innovation of a food vendor on the pike.'”
Burgers are typically made by forming patties out of ground beef and cooking them on either a grill or stove top until the internal temp reaches 160 degrees F. The cooked burger is then sandwiched in a hamburger bun along with ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomato slices, lettuce and sometimes cheese.
Burgers are not a typical healthy fare, with the beef containing a high amount of fat. To make burgers healthier, use a lean variety of beef or ground chicken or turkey. Also, decrease or omit the amount of fat- and calorie-heavy toppings such as mayo and cheese.
Burgers can be cooked from frozen, but the cook time will increase. If at all possible, allow the frozen burger to thaw before cooking it. When short on time, cooking burgers from frozen works fine.
