Ingredients for Chicken Parmesan Stromboli
You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this most amazing chicken parm stromboli.
Boneless skinless chicken breasts – Cooked and shredded.
Pizza dough – Frozen premade pizza dough from the store works great (let sit in fridge overnight) or make your own homemade pizza dough.
Marinara sauce – Store bought or make your own homemade marinara! I also like to serve the stromboli with some extra sauce for dipping.
Cheese – mozzarella cheese preferred, but use any melty variety such as provolone or white cheddar
Parmesan cheese – I use grated, but shaved parmesan is delicious too.
Egg – The egg wash gives the outer crust a nice golden crispness.
How to Make Chicken Parmigiana Stromboli
Follow my simple step by step instructions to make the perfect stromboli loaded with flavorful chicken parmigiana.
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
Step 2
Place the chicken in the prepared baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until juices run clear and meat is cooked through. Let chicken cool, shred it, and place in a small bowl. Increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees F.
Step 3
Lightly flour a work surface. Roll dough into a 14×10-inch rectangle. Spread with tomato sauce, leaving a 1-inch border around the dough edges on all sides. Top with the shredded chicken, mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese.
Step 4
Fold 1 inch of the short end of the dough over the chicken mixture filling. Then fold the long side of the rectangle ends over the filling, pinching the dough together at the corners.
Roll the dough, starting at one of the long ends, as tightly as possible. Press dough and pinch seam to seal the pizza crust.
Step 5
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray lightly with cooking spray. Transfer the roll, seam side down, to the prepared baking sheet and brush the top of the dough with the egg wash.
You can optionally cut a couple small slits in the top of the crust. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown.
Step 6
Loosen the stromboli from the parchment using a spatula. Transfer to a cutting board, cut into 1-inch slices, optionally garnish with some fresh basil, and serve immediately!
Recipe Notes
- You can use pre-made dough from the store or make your own homemade pizza dough.
- Instead of cooking, cooling, and shredding chicken breasts, meat pulled from a rotisserie chicken or pre-shredded chicken can be used to save time.
- You can also sub chicken breasts for chicken tenders or chicken strips.
- Make sure the pizza dough is at room temperature to make rolling it out easier.
- I like to serve the stromboli with some extra sauce for dipping.
- Cut the stromboli slices into bite-sized pieces to serve as an appetizer.
How to Roll Out Pizza Dough
Make sure the dough is at room temperature before rolling. Lightly flour a flat work surface and place the dough in the center. Sprinkle a bit of flour over top as well and use a rolling pin to roll it into the desired rectangular shape.
If you need to press the dough a bit with your hands to get it into the proper shape, rub a tiny bit of olive oil onto your hands to ensure the dough doesn’t stick.
How to Serve Chicken Parm Stromboli
This chicken parmesan stromboli is a meal in itself, but I like to serve it with a classic chopped salad, zesty Italian pasta salad, or you can choose from any of these 22 great summer salads.
I also like to serve this stromboli with some extra marinara sauce for dipping and some delicious homemade garlic bread.
How to Store Leftover Stromboli
Cool the stromboli thoroughly before storing.
Wrap the cooled stromboli well in plastic wrap or place leftover slices in an airtight container or zip top bag. Stored properly, refrigerated stromboli will be at its best up to 4-5 days.
Can You Freeze Stromboli
Yes, stromboli freezes great! To freeze stromboli, cool it completely, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap then in aluminum foil. Place the wrapped stromboli in a freezer safe bag and write the date on it.
Stored properly, stromboli can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen stromboli in the fridge or on the counter before reheating.
How to Reheat Chicken Parmesan Stromboli
You can reheat stromboli in the oven, air fryer, or microwave.
In the oven – Preheat the oven to 350°. Place the stromboli pieces on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until heated through.
In the air fryer – Place stromboli pieces in the air fryer and cook at 400° for 5-7 minutes.
In the microwave – Place stromboli pieces on a microwave safe plate and cover loosely with a paper towel. Heat on high for 30 second blasts until heated through to your liking.
Stromboli vs Calzone
There is one main difference between calzones and stromboli and that is their final shape. But there are a few other subtle differences as well.
A calzone is typically made from a round piece of dough that is folded over and crimped shut into a half circle. Calzones are typically made with pizza sauce and other pizza toppings such as cheese, pepperoni and sausage.
A calzone is usually considered an individual serving and can be eaten on the go with your hands. You can easily turn this recipe into chicken parmesan calzone.
Stromboli uses a rectangular piece of dough and is rolled and baked in the form of a log or roll and is sliced before eating. Strombolis can be made with any variation of ingredients and tend to be more creative.
Many versions contain cold cuts such as salami and various cheeses. A proper stromboli can feed 4-5 people.
