This classic apple crisp recipe with oatmeal is the BEST. It is tried, tested and never fails! Perfect way to use up apples in the fall.

    Why This Recipe Works

I’m not sure when or how my apple obsession started, but it’s severe. Apples and I, we are an unstoppable force this time of year. I posted my delicious Apple Crisp recipe a really long, long time ago and realized it desperately needed an update.

I made a few tweaks to the recipe and took new photos and here you go. Re-introducing the BEST Apple Crisp recipe you’ll find anywhere on the internet. Or anywhere, for that matter. You will love this crisp. It is jam-packed with apples and yummy flavor that you will not be able to resist.

    Recipe Ingredients

Apples – Use medium baking apples such as honeycrisp, gala, golden delicious, jonagold or granny smith. A mix of sweet and tart apples will bring a lot of dimension to the flavor of the pie.

Sugars – If you prefer, you can add more naturally sweet apples and reduce the amount of brown sugar you added. Other sugar substitutes that would be great are maple syrup, coconut sugar or stevia. To make it sweeter, add another 1/2 cup of brown sugar.

Old-fashioned oats – Definitely stick with old fashioned oats for the best result (no quick oats!). If quick oats are all you have, you will more likely have a consistency of oatmeal than a nice crisp chewy topping.

Spice mixture – If you enjoy the spice in the baked apples, additional flavors you could add or exchange are ginger, cardamom or allspice and start with a 1/2 tsp of any.

Toppings – Serve this warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! Even better, pour salted caramel sauce over the top of it all. If desired, spoon a dollop or two of Homemade Whipped Cream on top!

How To Make Classic Apple Crisp With Oatmeal Recipe

    Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and coat a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray. Peel and slice 6 medium apples.

An apple peeler sitting next to a bowl of peeled apples in water.

Place sliced apples in the prepared pan in an even layer.

In a medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and cinnamon and mix well. Sprinkle evenly over the apple slices and pour water evenly over all.

Sliced apples in a baking dish next to the same dish with cinnamon mixture sprinkled over the top.

    Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and butter. Stir until crumbly and sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture.

Crumble topping in a bowl next to a baking dish with it spread evenly over the top.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!

    Recipe Notes

    • I have fallen IN LOVE with my dear apple peeler and corer. If a lot of apples go through your kitchen, you absolutely must consider buying one. It’s the most magical tool in my kitchen!
    • Feel free to replace some of the sugar with honey for a bit less of an unhealthy dessert (ha!).

Does Apple Crisp Need To Be Refrigerated?

For optimal freshness, keep apple crisp loosely covered and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

    Keep Apples From Browning

When chopping and peeling the apples, fill a large bowl about half with cool water and squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon into it. The lemon juice will keep your apples from getting brown while you get them prepped for the recipe.

You’ll need to peel, core and chop the apples. Place them into the water-lemon juice mixture as you work.
