Why This Recipe Works
Have I told you lately how much I love making homemade sauces? I LOVE MAKING HOMEMADE SAUCES! I never would have believed this before I started out on this sauce-making journey, but they are so much more delicious than anything I could buy from the store.
Teriyaki sauce is one of the only sauces I hadn’t made on my own prior to last week, so it was time. It is so quick and easy and one of the most delicious versions of this sweet and savory sauce that I’ve ever tried.
How To Make Teriyaki Sauce With Honey
Step 1
Create a slurry by combining the 2 tablespoons cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl and whisking until cornstarch is fully dissolved. Set aside.
Step 2
In a medium saucepan, combine:
- Water
- Soy sauce
- Rice vinegar
- Sesame oil
- Brown sugar
- Honey
- Ground ginger
- Garlic powder
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
Step 3
Add the slurry to the saucepan and return to a boil, whisking often. Reduce heat to medium heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until desired thickness has been reached. Remove from heat and let cool.
Recipe Notes
- Replace rice vinegar with apple cider vinegar, if desired.
- Replace ground ginger with fresh grated ginger (equal amounts) for a stronger ginger flavor.
- Make this sauce gluten free by using GF soy sauce!
- Use low sodium soy sauce for a less salty end result.
- If the sauce is too sweet, add ginger and garlic until sweetness dissipates.
- Once the cornstarch slurry is added, the sauce will get thick quickly so keep a close eye and remove from the heat once the desired consistency is reached.
